Scott Butcher '92

"I utilize the skills taught to me by Dr. Shepherd and the rest of the History faculty everyday. I often surprise physicians and staff with the fact that I have a BA in History. I still refer to Paul Starr’s book “The Social Transformation of American Medicine”. I even purchased a copy for my medical director and we both sat down and talked about not only where medicine started but used the book as a jumping off point to where we are going and how we can modify our current practice given historical trends."

Jordan Ring '13

Jordan spent the Fall 2011 semester in the Washington Semester Program, where she took classes on international peace and conflict resolution at American University in Washington DC. In addition to her classes, she also participated in a trip to the Balkans to experience first-hand how the people and governments of the former Yugoslavia have been recovering from the ethnic conflicts that plagued the region throughout the 1990s. A member of Centenary’s representatives in the Model Arab League, Jordan also traveled to Lebanon to meet with political leaders and social activists this past summer on a fellowship from the National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations (NCUSAR).

Drew Burnham '12

Drew wrote a senior seminar paper in which he analyzed why some countries are able to pay back their International Monetary Fund loans on time while others go into arrears. Through his statistical analysis he found that in addition to the standard economic factors, key political characteristics of countries have a strong effect on the ability to repay a loan on time. A Political Science and Economics double major, he presented this paper at the Economics Scholars Program for Undergraduate Research hosted by the Dallas Federal Reserve last Spring. He is now attending law school at LSU.

Zac Cowert '11

Zac wrote a senior seminar paper about a French general who commanded Confederate soldiers. His paper won first place in the W. Darrell Overdyke Award sponsored by the North Louisiana Historical Association and will be published in the journal North Louisiana History. In the summers of 2011 and 2012, he engaged in an internship at the Fredericksburg Spotsylvania National Battlefield Park in Virginia. He has been awarded a graduate fellowship at the University of West Virginia.

Zac Cowert, class of 2011, wrote a senior seminar paper about a French general who commanded Confederate soldiers. His paper won first place in the W. Darrell Overdyke Award sponsored by the North Louisiana Historical Association and will be published in the journal North Louisiana History. In the summers of 2011 and 2012, he engaged in an internship at the Fredericksburg Spotsylvania National Battlefield Park in Virginia. He has been awarded a graduate fellowship at the University of West Virginia.

Linda Bird, 2011, wrote a senior seminar paper about the woman’s suffrage campaign in North Louisiana. She was awarded the prize for best undergraduate paper at the regional meeting of the history honor society Phi Alpha Theta. He paper also won first place in the W. Darrell Overdyke Award competition of the North Louisiana Historical Association and has been published. She is currently a law student at the University of Arkansas.

2010

Sara Savage, 2010 has been accepted into the Ph.D. program at University College, London and recently presented a paper about New Orleans and the Spanish flu epidemic at the American Association for the History of Medicine in Baltimore.

Lesley Ragsdale, 2010 is a graduate student in the library and information science program at the University of California, Los Angeles.
