SHREVEPORT, LA — The Centenary College Choir opened its 2017-2018 season this week with an appearance at the annual banquet of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Several more performances are planned this fall, including the annual “Rhapsody in View” at Shreveport’s Riverview Theater on October 21 and 22.

The Choir sang several selections at the St. Vincent de Paul Society banquet for the second consecutive year, including the theme song of the event, “Not Too Far From Here.” The Society is known for person-to-person mission work and the banquet raises funds to support its cause.

On Saturday, September 16 at 7:30 p.m., the Choir will join the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra in its season opening performance at Shreveport’s Riverview Theater, collaborating on a rarely-performed piece, Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy. More information and tickets are available at shreveportsymphony.com.

“The Choral Fantasy uniquely begins as a piano fantasy, evolves to a theme and variations with orchestra, and then incorporates the choir as the work reaches a joyous conclusion,” explains Dr. David Hobson, Centenary College Choir director. “Most scholars recognize the Choral Fantasy as foreshadowing a similar design in Beethoven’s famous 9th Symphony.”

The Choir rounds out its early fall performances on Sunday, September 17 at First United Methodist Church in Bossier City. In a 3:00 p.m. service hosted by the Shreveport District of the United Methodist Church, the Choir will join with clergy and lay leaders to celebrate the “worshipful work” of the church.

“The theme of the service continues from the recent Annual Conference meeting of the church, ‘Bold Imagination,’ and also includes a special message from Bishop Cynthia Harvey,” says Hobson. “The Choir’s participation adds to the worship service with several anthems and highlights the connection between the United Methodist Church and Centenary.”
