Centenary hosts new "Faith at Work" speaker series

General Robin Rand

SHREVEPORT, LA — General Robin Rand of Air Force Global Strike Command at Barksdale Air Force Base will be the first featured speaker in a new lecture series sponsored by Centenary College’s Christian Leadership Center (CLC). Rand will speak about how the work of deterrence is also the work of peace on Thursday, February 1 as part of the new “Faith at Work” series. The lecture begins at 6:00 p.m. in the Whited Room at Bynum Commons, preceded by a short reception at 5:30 p.m.

“This new series is a great opportunity to connect Centenary College with the broader community so that they can take part in what’s being offered through the Christian Leadership Center,” says Rev. Lindy Broderick, Centenary chaplain and director of the CLC. “At the same time, we’re connecting students with successful community leaders who are role models in Christian leadership in their secular careers. Future speakers within this series will present topics that expand on the Wesleyan core principles of faith by Scripture, Reason, and Experience.”

The “Faith at Work” speaker series will feature national and community leaders who incorporate their faith as part of their everyday lives and careers and highlight how they lead their organizations based on principles of faith and integrity. The speakers will also participate in additional conversations with CLC students to share their personal experiences of the intersection of faith and leadership in public life.

General Rand is Commander, Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) and Commander, Air Forces Strategic – Air, U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana. Rand was commissioned in 1979 after graduating from the United States Air Force Academy and has logged more than 5,000 flying hours, including more than 470 combat hours. During his talk, he will share how he leads with faith while commanding more than 33,700 troops throughout the world.

The second installment in the “Faith at Work” series will feature United States Representative Mike Johnson, who will speak on “The Importance of Civility” on Thursday, April 5, 2018.

“As an institution affiliated with the United Methodist Church, Centenary is pleased to be able to host speakers who help us explore how one’s beliefs inform and influence one’s work,” says Centenary president Dr. Christopher L. Holoman. “Since John Wesley, Methodists have always stressed this interaction between our intellect and our spirituality, as embodied in the UMC’s call for ‘Open Hearts, Open Doors, Open Minds.’ As a liberal arts college, Centenary is indeed committed to open and respectful dialogue between people with divergent points of view. Over the course of the speaker series, we look forward to welcoming a wide range of perspectives.”

The “Faith at Work” speaker series is supported by a generous anonymous donor and is free and open to the public. Space is limited, however, so RSVPs are requested. Please RSVP via email to lbroderick@centenary.edu or call 318.869.5156.
