SHREVEPORT, LA — Heather Wetzel, a candidate for a faculty position in studio art at Centenary College, will give an artist talk on Friday, November 2 at 3:00 p.m. at the Meadows Museum of Art. The talk, entitled “Contemplations of Life in the 21st Century,” is free and open to the public.

Wetzel will speak about her work with historic photographic processes, hand papermaking, and book arts. In an artist statement on her website, Wetzel explains her interest in tangible media and the ideas driving her artistic work.

“Analog ways are being replaced by faster technology,” Wetzel writes. “Photographic prints and books are being replaced by intangible, transient digital files made of zeros and ones – no texture, no smell, no weight. I prefer to work at a slower pace, with materials and processes playing important roles in my making. My work is grounded in contemplation of life in the 21st century, examining current social concerns, using a variety of materials and methods.”

Wetzel earned a Master of Arts & Humanities from Arcadia University in Glenside, Pennsylvania and a Master of Fine Arts in Visual Studies from the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, New York. She has previously taught at The Ohio State University and at Memphis College of Art in Memphis, Tennessee, where she was head of the BFA and MFA photography programs. Her work is on exhibit at the Anzenberger Gallery in Vienna, Austria, as well as in multiple collections.
