Environment and Society Overview

Students undertaking this minor examine the various ways that people study and reflect on their environments. We often think about the environment as an object for scientific study, but stopping at the scientific study serves neither the environment nor humans very well. Philosophers and theologians reflect on the place of humans in the environment and the ethics of our interactions with it. Writers and artists provide reflections of about we perceive out surroundings and react to them. Economists and other policy makers address concerns about managing the resources and the environment so we can sustain our lives on this planet we call home. These various perspectives are all reflected in sustainability challenge courses that a student can select to build their minor. In addition to classes, students also develop independent studies that allow them to focus on a particular issue that interests them.

Environment and Society Requirements

At least twenty hours of courses work are required for the ENST minor, including six hours in courses numbered above 300. No more that four hours from the student’s major course requirements may be counted towards the minor. Up to six hours of coursework in any department may be added from outside the elective list, subject to the approval of an ENST advisor. One course in any department not offered as a Sustainability challenge course may be elected subject to the approval of an ENST advisor.
