General

This Handbook serves as a resource for students studying music at Centenary College’s Hurley School of Music. The primary academic resources, policies, and procedures for Centenary students are contained in the College’s Academic Catalogue and the Centenary Student Handbook. Review all student handbooks to adequately understand your rights and responsibilities as a member of the Centenary Community.

Degrees

All students who wish to pursue a music degree must audition in order to be admitted to the Hurley School of Music. Hurley offers the BA in Music, with possible concentrations in:

  • Choral Music
  • Composition
  • Performance
  • Sacred Music

and the BA in Vocal Music Education.

The general course of study for all music majors is largely prescribed in the first and second year. Students may choose a concentration during or after the first or second years of study. Music students work closely with their academic advisors to identify the best academic plan. Music degree requirements can be found in the Academic Catalogue. Each music student has a faculty advisor. Meet regularly with your advisor; he or she is here to help you. If you have any problems in classes, proactively discuss them with your advisor. Advisors can also refer you for additional help, perhaps with a College Counselor or the Dean of the School of Music. You can learn more about the role of your advisor here.
