Building Information and Regulations
Hours
The School of Music consists of four buildings: the Hurley Memorial Music Building, the Anderson Choral Building, the Feazel Instrumental Rehearsal Hall, and the Music Library. Building hours vary, depending upon the day of the week or time of year. The keyless entry system allows access to the Hurley Music Building and the Anderson Choral Building with an approved Centenary Student ID.
Practice Rooms
Practice rooms are located in the Hurley Music Building and the Anderson Choral Building. Practice rooms are reserved for music majors and non-majors taking applied lessons. No other parties may use the practice facilities, unless approved by the Office of the Dean. Students may use classrooms and rehearsal rooms for practice, but they must return the room to order when finished. Repeated failure to do so will result in the removal of this privilege.
No Spilled Food or Drink
No eating and drinking in any practice rooms, rehearsal rooms, classrooms, or the recital hall. Use the student lounges or the music library for eating and drinking. Student lounges are not regularly maintained by facilities staff. Students are responsible for keeping the common areas clean.
Equipment—Put It Back
Handle equipment with care!! Always put chairs, stands, and instruments back where you found them. Do not place small items like pens or pencils on pianos where they can fall into the action. The grand pianos located on the stage of the recital hall are not to be used for practice unless permission is obtained from your applied music instructor and cleared through the Office of the Dean.
Anderson Auditorium (Hurley Music Building)
The Anderson Auditorium, located in the Hurley Music Building is for performances and dress rehearsals, not for routine practice. You cannot use the recital hall for practice, unless your teacher has scheduled it with the Music Office or the Dean of the School of Music has given you permission. Students preparing for recitals may use the recital hall without a faculty member present to practice for recitals as follows:
Half recital—two hours practice
Full recital—four hours practice
Student Recital Hour (Friday)—one hour practice
Anyone using the recital hall is responsible for putting the pianos and/or harpsichord back in the proper place with the covers on AND LEAVING ALL DOORS TO THE FACILITY LOCKED. Follow all posted instructions for lights and blowers, located both stage right and left. Faculty members are authorized to use the facility at any time that it is not in use. Anyone planning to use the facility at a specific time should
schedule the use of the recital hall in the Music Office.
Feazel Hall & Other Classrooms
All classrooms must be booked through the music office to be guaranteed for availability. See the Assistant to the Dean of Music if you need access to a classroom or the Wenger Practice Room in the Anderson Choral Building. The Wenger Practice Room, with its special surround sound feature, is available to all students for regular practice. Plan ahead to get access to the room. (See “Practice Rooms” for additional
regulations.)
Music Library
The Hurley Music Library houses approximately 26,000 items, consisting of scores, compact discs, videocassettes, long playing records, reference books, selected music journals, special collections, etc. Music books (like composer biographies) and many music journals are located in the main campus library, Magale Library. The library has a computer lab with software capabilities for composition (Finale), music theory, MIDI, word processing, internet access, and e-mail. The library also has wi-fi access to the campus network. Students may check out music scores, but recordings and reference materials remain for use inside the library only. A valid college photo identification card is required to get you into the library system and allow you check out privileges. Bring your ID at the beginning of the year to get into the system. The normal check out length is four weeks; materials may be renewed or recalled. Recordings may be checked out for special reasons by permission of the Director of the Hurley Music Library. There are specialized music databases available for research projects; please see the Director of the Music Library if you need help accessing these databases. Special Collections include the Redwine Opera Recordings Collection, the Bettinger Soundtracks Collection, and the Sanders Broadway Sheet Music Collection. All of the special collections are cataloged on the College’s electronic library catalog.
