Chimp Haven

Chimp Haven's mission is to provide humane lifetime care for chimpanzees that have been retired from medical research, the entertainment industry or are no longer wanted as pets. At Chimp Haven chimpanzees live permanently in spacious, wooded, outdoor habitats as part of a chimp community. An underlying component of this mission is educating the public about conservation and protection of these endangered nonhuman primates. Centenary students can work with the Chimp Haven staff in the following ways:

  • Developing community educational programs

  • Creating PR materials

  • Assisting in necessary enrichment activities for the chimpanzees

Participants must present a negative read on a current TB test before beginning their service.

  • Assist with tutoring elementary students and teens
  • Assist with feeding the hungry through the food pantry
  • Participate in youth basketball program activities
  • Assist with Thursday night activities which include serving and clean-up of a community meal
  • Assist with seasonal happenings which include Fall Fest, the Christmas market, Easter celebrations, and semi-annual rummage sales

  • Provide administrative support such as generating reports, preparing mail outs, assembling training materials, and taking minutes and on weekdays from 8:30 am –    4: 30 pm
  • Assist the directors of the Friendship Houses with programming for children who participate in the After School Program at each of the Friendship Houses (Monday – Thursday from 3:30 pm -5:30 pm, some Friday evenings  & Saturday mornings)
  • Help with major initiatives involving the Community Renewal strategy

  • Volunteer at the Red River Revel on behalf of the Food Bank in the coupon booth
  • Support and/or represent the Food Bank at special events
  • Help with Willis Knighton and Pack the Pantry food drives
  • Provide occasional day to day office support such as filing

  • Help with food distribution to mobile pantries and other food pantries
  • Truck driver assistant and backpack produce delivery every Friday before noon

The Institute for Global Outreach (IGO) is a charitable organization that provides basic humanitarian services to some of the most destitute people in our world. Centenary students can serve with this community partner in the following ways:

  • Unloading and sorting paints, fertilizers, etc. @ household hazardous waste collections 8 times per year
  • Picking up litter in neighborhoods
  • Helping at the Centenary Community Garden or any of the other gardens facilitated by the organization
  • Provide assistance at the Mobile Market with cooking demonstrations and selling products
  • Collection of recycling at the Independence Bowl
  • Help children with nutrition lessons
  • Compile tree inventories under the direction of the Executive Director

Starbase Louisiana 2.0 participants explore what it means to be an engineer and use their scientific reasoning to make design decisions in collaborative projects.
