R.A.D. - Rape Aggression Defense

According to several national studies, 1 out of 4 college-aged women will be the victim of a rape or attempted rape. In order to address this problem, the Department of Public Safety offers Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) classes. R.A.D is a national self defense program. The objective of the course is to develop and enhance the options of self defense, so they may become viable considerations to the woman who is attacked. The course has three basic components: lecture, physical defense techniques and a simulation exercise.

Prior to school breaks, the Department of Public Safety sets up a checkpoint for students to bring their vehicles. At this location, we will have equipment and supplies available for routine maintenance. An officer will teach you how to check things such as your air pressure, belts/hoses, oil, antifreeze, and wiper fluid levels to help ensure a safe trip.

Alcohol and Drug Education

The Centenary College Department of Public Safety sponsors alcohol and drug education and prevention programs throughout the academic year. We have used beer goggles and DUI Simulators to demonstrate the effects of drinking alcohol on an individual’s coordination and reflexes. The Department of Public Safety in conjunction with Sodexo Dining Services offers Drink Safe Coasters which are designed to detect the presence of date rape drugs in a beverage.

Student Patrol

The Student Patrol Program is designed to complement the effort of the College police officers to keep people and property safe on campus. Student Patrol Officers will provide an escort for you from one location to another. To obtain an escort 24 hours a day, call 869-5000. Student patrol officers also help ensure the smooth operation of the College by assisting in parking enforcement and traffic control.

Operation ID

The Operation ID Program is designed to deter theft and aid in the return of found or recovered property to the legitimate owner. The two components of this program work in tandem to accomplish this goal. The first component, personal property information cards, provide a place to record information such as the make, model, and serial number of valuable items. The second entails engraving identifiable information or marks on the property to make it distinct. The program is offered throughout the year, however, the Department of Public Safety encourages students to complete the Personal Property Information cards and have items such as TV's, DVD players, computers, etc. engraved while moving into the residence halls.

Fingerprinting

As you seek various jobs and internships during college you may be advised that a set of your fingerprints must be submitted with the application. The Department of Public Safety offers a free fingerprinting service to all students, faculty and staff (other local agencies charge for this service). Call 869-5759 or send an email to dps@centenary.edu to set up an appointment for your fingerprints to be taken.

Campus Watch Program
"We've got your back."
The Campus Watch Program is designed for individuals to anonymously report crimes on campus. For certain incidents, the Department of Public Safety may even announce that a reward is being offered for information which results in the apprehension of the responsible party. Use any public access phone to report information anonymously. These phones can easily be identified by the Campus Watch stickers. Simply dial 841-7238 and follow the recorded directions on how to leave your information and collect your reward. The Department of Public Safety understands there are individuals who know information about crimes on campus but are hesitant to get involved.

Call Boxes

Emergency call boxes are special telephones, which are strategically placed throughout campus. These telephones are easy to spot due to special markings and lights. The Emergency call boxes have a handicap accessible button that when pushed automatically calls the campus police department. When the emergency button is activated the call box has a strobe light which begins to flash. This light serves as a deterrent to would be attackers and assists responding officers in locating the caller. The call box also has a regular telephone capability allowing the caller to place local telephone calls.
