Centenary Archives opens new "Grounded and Rooted" exhibit
SHREVEPORT, LA — A new exhibit, Grounded and Rooted…In the Centenary Archives, 1885-2014, is now on display. Prepared by the Centenary Archives and Special Collections, it taps into the Louisiana Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church's 2016 theme – "Grounded and Rooted, Ephesians 3:14-21."
"We decided to support this year's Annual Conference theme with a literal and fun twist – by highlighting material about groundbreaking ceremonies and gardening activities connected to Louisiana's United Methodists," says Centenary Archivist Chris Brown '01.
The exhibit includes archival sources documenting such buildings as First United Methodist Church (Houma, LA), Brown Memorial Chapel at Centenary College, and the first home constructed by the Retired Ministers Homes Board in Ruston. Also featured are forestry initiatives launched by Wesley Chapel Methodist Church (Coushatta, LA) and the reinternment service for Rev. Richmond Nolley, who is recognized as the first Methodist martyr in Louisiana.
The exhibit is now on display through August in the Whited Room lobby of Bynum Commons. It is also accessible online at centenary.edu/archives. Brown and student worker Olivia Brignac '19 researched and prepared the exhibit.
