Centenary geologist selected as environmental division president
SHREVEPORT, LA — The American Association of Petroleum Geologists has announced that Mary L. Barrett, PhD, professor emeritus of geology at Centenary College of Louisiana, has been selected as the 2018-2019 president of the Division of Environmental Geosciences. She will take office this July as the DEG president-elect.
The DEG is concerned with increasing the awareness of energy geologists about the environment during exploration and development, and it provides the AAPG with a geoscientific voice in the public arena regarding such matters.
“It is an honor to serve and continue to advance the DEG’s goals and objectives,” says Barrett. “I will spend time on DEG’s goal of communicating to the general public and government agencies that the AAPG is committed to protecting the environment while developing the world’s natural resources in a responsible manner.”
Barrett was a Centenary geology professor from 1992 to 2009 following employment with Mobil Oil in improved oil recovery of aging fields. Her professional papers are on sedimentary, petroleum and environmental geology, and on the history and impact of oilfield wastes. She has served as an expert for both defendants and plaintiffs in Louisiana oilfield pollution litigation. Barrett holds geology degrees from Stephen F. Austin St. University and the Johns Hopkins University.
