Centenary hosts Rep. Mike Johnson in "Faith at Work" series April 5
SHREVEPORT, LA — United States Representative Mike Johnson will be the second speaker in Centenary’s “Faith at Work” speaker series sponsored by the College’s Christian Leadership Center (CLC). Johnson, the author of a congressional resolution on civility, will use this topic as the basis for his 6:00 p.m.presentation on Thursday, April 5 in the Whited Room at Bynum Commons. A reception precedes the lecture at 5:30 p.m. Both the reception and lecture are free and open to the public.
“In today’s divided society, now more than ever, we need to learn how to have productive disagreements,” says Rev. Lindy Broderick, Centenary’s chaplain and CLC director. “Democracy is really rooted in the concept of civility and the ability to discuss controversial issues in an environment of respect. I’ve been interested in these issues for many years, starting with my advocacy work in the business world and continuing today as I work with college students.”
Johnson served in the Louisiana Legislature from February 2015 until his election to Louisiana’s Fourth Congressional District, where he represents nearly 760,000 residents in 15 parishes. Johnson was appointed to the House Judiciary Committee and the Natural Resources Committee as well as several subcommittees of each. As vice chairman of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, Johnson is one of only three freshmen members to chair a subcommittee in the House.
Johnson is the author of the “Commitment to Civility,” a document released by a bipartisan group of 53 freshman members of the 115th United States Congress pledging their support for restoring collegiality, trust, and civility to Congress. To date, more than 120 members have signed the pledge.
The “Faith at Work” series highlights national and community leaders who incorporate their faith as part of their everyday lives and careers. Speakers in the series also participate in additional conversations with CLC students to share their personal experiences of the intersection of faith and leadership in public life. General Robin Rand, Commander, Air Force Global Strike Command and Commander, Air Forces Strategic – Air, U.S. Strategic Command at Barksdale Air Force Base delivered the inaugural “Faith at Work” lecture at Centenary on February 1.
“Faith at Work” is supported by a generous anonymous donor and is free and open to the public. Space is limited, however, so RSVPs are requested. Please RSVP via email to lbroderick@centenary.edu or call 318.869.5156. More information is available at centenary.edu/faithatwork.
