Centenary Percussion Ensemble performs April 24
SHREVEPORT, LA — The Centenary Percussion Ensemble will perform its spring concert on Tuesday, April 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Anderson Auditorium at Centenary’s Hurley School of Music. The concert is free and open to the public.
The concert will feature a stage full of standard and exotic percussion instruments, evoking music from the Far East and Russia alongside rock music-inspired body percussion pieces. Famous percussion composers Anthony Cirone and George Frock are represented as well as a marimba solo by the highly regarded Julie Davila.
The percussion ensemble is under the direction of Chandler Teague, adjunct professor of percussion at Centenary. Teague also serves as the principal timpanist and percussionist of the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra and Shreveport Opera, principal timpanist of the Longview Symphony and Breckinridge Music Festival in Colorado, and performs with the Marshall and South Arkansas Symphonies. He also teaches percussion at Grambling State University.
Centenary’s seven-member percussion ensemble consists of percussion majors, vocalists, and other instrumentalists. Participation is open to all students at Centenary College, subject to an audition.
“These concerts challenge the students to create sounds and develop techniques that are new to them and open up a whole new aural experience, both for the musicians and for the audience,” explains Teague. “In a small chamber ensemble, everyone has to do their part, which can be very challenging but also fun and very rewarding.”
