Centenary students win at regional music conference
SHREVEPORT, LA — Six students from Centenary College’s Hurley School of Music traveled to Hattiesburg, Mississippi on November 9-11 for the National Association of Teachers of Singing Southern Region Conference and Student Auditions. After competing against hundreds of other singers from Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, two Centenary students won prizes in the final round of the auditions.
“We are justifiably proud of these great young musicians,” said Dr. Gale Odom, Dean of the Hurley School of Music. “Centenary singers are known for their well-crafted interpretations of their vocal literature.”
Centenary students Alex Shannon and Zipphora Hyman sang for a master class led by Richard Hobson, while Janine Cunningham and Drew Echols both sang in the semifinal round of the competition. In the final round, Carlos Romero won third place in Sophomore Men and Timothy McCoy won fourth place in Senior Men.
The Centenary group also heard lectures, a vocal concert, and saw a production of the play Master Class. All of the Centenary singers are students of Dean Gale Odom and Centenary Artist-in-Residence Cindy Sadler at the Hurley School of Music.
