Centenary's Meadows Museum to present exhibit by Shreveport native William Scarlato
SHREVEPORT, LA — Centenary College’s Meadows Museum of Art opens Shreveport native William Scarlato’s Never the Same Moment later this month. This retrospective exhibition of Scarlato’s paintings, printmaking, and drawings will run through January 14, 2018 and opens with an artist’s reception on Friday, October 27 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
Scarlato grew up in Shreveport and graduated from Jesuit High School (now Loyola College Prep) before earning a bachelor of fine arts in printmaking from Northern Arizona University and a master of fine arts in printmaking from Yale. He has been a professor of art at Benedictine University in Illinois since 1990, teaching courses that include all levels of drawing, painting, and printmaking as well as fundamentals of design and a senior seminar in art criticism. He has also taught at the University of New Hampshire and at two locations of New England College in New Hampshire and West Sussex, England.
The Meadows retrospective highlights Scarlato’s diverse artistic interests, mediums, and influences. The exhibition includes rural and urban landscape paintings, primarily of the Midwest and New England, that seek to express “Americanness” as a sense of place by evoking the character and stories of the people who live there. The still life paintings include trompe l’oeil realism and Modernist abstraction with symbolic expression as a common feature. The intaglio and lithographic prints explore Scarlato’s conceptual and mimetic nature.
Scarlato has written of his art, “Growing up in Shreveport is at the very root of my artistic nature, which I would describe as primarily romantic. The prints and abstract drawings are a fuller representation of my conceptual self, which also shows up in my paintings. I allow for this open-endedness because it’s my natural turn of mind; it is also because I teach abstraction to my students. Abstraction can be taught as effectively as the mimetic tradition of realism.”
Current exhibitions at the Meadows include Jim Arendt’s Unraveled, closing on October 22, and Nathan Madrid’s Portraits of ‘The Others,’ at the museum through November 22. More information about current and upcoming Meadows exhibitions is available at centenary.edu/meadows.
