SHREVEPORT, LA — The Singers’ Workshop at Centenary College’s Hurley School of Music will present “Gather Us Around – An Evening of Opera Arias & Scenes” on Saturday, December 10 at 7:30 p.m. The concert in Hurley’s Anderson Auditorium is free and open to the public.

“Opera, laughter, a touch of stage combat, rhythm, mildly adult situations, and beautiful music will all be on display in Anderson Auditorium on December 10,” says Twyla Robinson, artist in residence at Hurley and director of the Singers’ Workshop.

The program includes selections from operas spanning several musical eras, including Le Nozze di Figaro, The Mikado, Don Giovanni, Orpheus in the Underworld, and Dead Man Walking. Students in Robinson’s workshop began the semester with an assigned piece and have created their own staging as they prepared the pieces for the stage.

The Singers' Workshop at Centenary provides students with the opportunity to study and improve their stagecraft through solo as well as ensemble performance. Students improve their communication skills in either music theatre or opera, while also learning important practical information about issues such as period movement, working with lighting, controlling nerves, and the acting process for singers. Students have many opportunities to perform and have their work critiqued.
