Literacy Volunteers at Centenary College hosts annual Scrabble tournament
SHREVEPORT, LA — The Literacy Volunteers at Centenary College (LVCC) are sponsoring their 9th annual Scrabble Tournament Saturday, May 7th on the Centenary College campus. All proceeds will benefit the Literacy Volunteers in their fight to end adult illiteracy.
What: Scrabble Tournament
When: May 7, 2016 – Registration begins at noon, play starts at 1:00 p.m.
Where: Kilpatrick Auditorium, Centenary campus
Entry Fee: $20 per player for adults; $10 for students
Teams of two players each will compete in either a beginner or intermediate division. Each team is guaranteed three rounds of Scrabble play and all players are provided with refreshments. The first place team in each division receives $200, and the second place team receives $100.
At least 28 percent of the adult population in Louisiana is functionally illiterate, one of the highest rates in the nation. Founded in 1984, LVCC offers a variety of free tutoring programs, all aimed at increasing the basic literacy skills of adults in Northwest Louisiana. In 2015, approximately 100 LVCC tutors helped over 300 students improve their reading and writing skills.
