Local artists to exhibit at Centenary's Magale Library in September

"Roux," by Janet Maines

SHREVEPORT, LA — Three local artists will open an exhibit entitled “Multiple Perspectives” at Centenary College’s Magale Library on Thursday, September 7. Work by Janet Maines, Claire Sharp, and Charles Tabor will be exhibited in the library’s lobby through the end of September.

“We reach into the art community to invite Centenary students as well as local, state, and regional artists of all genres to display their artistic talents,” says Christy Wrenn, director of library services. “Magale Library’s lobby is a gathering space that the entire community can enjoy.”

Portrait artist Janet Maines is a member of the Portrait Society of America and is listed on the Shreveport Regional Arts Council’s NWLA Artists Roster. She shows her portraits at local galleries, fairs, and private receptions and has also led workshops on portraiture since rediscovering drawing as a creative outlet in 2014.

Claire Sharp is drawn to traditional landscapes, still lifes, and portraits for her oil paintings, but her subject matter is often more unconventional: crowd scenes, a flock of birds, or a cemetery. Her style is representational with post-impressionistic features, and her paintings utilize a broad palette of colors. Sharp’s work has been shown in a number of student and juried exhibits.

Charles Tabor is a self-taught artist who has devoted much time to studying the works of Rembrandt, Sargent, Velazquez, Titian, and others. Much of his own work focuses on still life, and he is particularly drawn to the Old Masters’ treatment of light as well as the abstractness of impressionism. Tabor has previously mounted a solo show at the Central Gallery in Shreveport and won a Juror Award at the Red River Revel.

“Multiple Perspectives” opens with a special reception on Thursday, September 7 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.
