Meadows Museum of Art hosts literary event March 7
SHREVEPORT, LA — Centenary College’s Meadows Museum of Art will be the setting for an evening of poetry, prose, and history inspired by the Museum’s current exhibit, A Glimpse of Shreveport from 1918. The event, “Photography, Work, and the Birth of Modern Shreveport,” will be held Wednesday, March 7 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. It is free and open to the public.
Readings from staff and faculty from Centenary College and members of the Friends of the Meadows Museum, supported by musical recordings from the era, will illuminate the cultural and daily life of Shreveport – and America – at the end of World War I. The event will provide context for the photographs featured in A Glimpse of Shreveport from 1918, which depict some of Shreveport’s businesses and labor force from 100 years ago.
“Our selection of readings will explore American and north Louisiana culture as it is on the verge of exploding into the Jazz Age of the 1920s,” says organizer Dr. Jefferson Hendricks, George A. Wilson Eminent Scholars Endowed Chair of American Literature at Centenary. “The readings will also provide insights into modern writers’ views of photography and the nature of work. We’ll be reading from writers such as Walt Whitman, E.E. Cummings, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Shreveport’s own John William Corrington.”
A Glimpse of Shreveport from 1918 and the March 7 evening are both partially supported by a grant from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities.
