Parisian monuments, alien landscapes, and corrupt elections on display at the Meadows Museum of Art
SHREVEPORT, LA — The Meadows Museum of Art opens the academic year Saturday, August 20, from 3 to 5 p.m., with a free public reception and three new exhibitions that run till October.
The first, "Centenary in Paris: A Monumental Experience," celebrates Centenary's innovative immersive curriculum. Since 2014, Centenary's first-year students have begun their college coursework in Paris, France, studying a variety of intensive academic subjects. This exhibition features work created by incoming students, as well as monumental original art designed by Professor Bruce Allen, to celebrate the Class of 2020 and a college classroom like no other.
The second exhibition, "The Court of King Skebal," is a collaboration by Bossier City multi-disciplinary artist Steve Zihlavsky and Shreveport musician and filmmaker Michael Futreal. Zihlavsky wields his scrap-work creativity to open an imaginary world full of alien creatures and environments, accompanied by an original musical score and soundscape, produced with Futreal's own hand-built electric and acoustic instruments. Futreal further complements Zihlavsky's visions with projected imagery. A reception for the artists will take place Saturday, September 10, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. with live music provided by Twang Darkly, Futreal's performing and recording trio.
The third exhibition, "Election Humours," showcases a print series by 18th-century British artist William Hogarth, who pioneered political cartooning and sequential narrative art in Europe. A witty, perceptive, and detailed satirist, Hogarth criticized the social problems he observed, including an allegedly crooked 1754 election in Oxfordshire, England. In conjunction with the exhibition, Centenary's new political science professor, Dr. Mark Leeper, will give a related lecture "Are They Still Hitting the Spot? An Historical Glance at the Use and Effectiveness of Political Ads in Presidential Campaigns" on Wednesday, October 12, from 6 to 7 p.m., discussing the origins and use of television advertising by presidential candidates, from Eisenhower to Clinton and Trump.
