Title IX is a federal law passed in 1972 that requires gender equity in every educational program that receives federal funding. While Title IX is most often associated with gender based discrimination in athletics, the law is much broader. Title IX prohibits gender discrimination in all college programs and activities, including, but not limited to, admission, recruiting, financial aid, academic advising and programs, housing, athletics, student services, recreational services, residential life programs, health services, counseling services, registration, classroom assignments, grading and discipline. Sexual harassment and sexual violence are forms of sex discrimination prohibited by Title IX.
